The United States has the highest maternal mortality rate of all highly-developed countries and continues to rise. This bill is a huge step towards reversing this trend.

 This bill directs the Department of Health and Human Services to establish a program to review pregnancy-related and pregnancy-associated deaths, establish and sustain maternal mortality review committee to review relevant information, and develop a plan to improve the quality of maternal care.

H.R. 1318, the “Preventing Maternal Deaths Act of 2017,” which reauthorizes, amend, and expand the Safe Motherhood initiative within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention including authorizing support for State and tribal Maternal Mortality Review Committees that meet certain requirements.
