PeriGen to demonstrate NIH validated fetal surveillance technologies at its HIMSS booth 3387

PRINCETON, New Jersey ─ February 27, 2013 Taylor Regional Hospital in Hawkinsville, Ga., and Griffin Hospital in Derby, Conn., completed activation of PeriGen’s PeriCALM® perinatal system in their respective facilities’ labor and delivery (L&D) departments.

The PeriCALM suite includes PeriCALM Tracings™, an advanced fetal surveillance system with two unique clinical decision support-based applications: PeriCALM Patterns™, a fetal heart rate pattern recognition software and PeriCALM Curve™, a dynamic labor progression software. All together, these solutions support and empower OB/GYN clinicians in delivering optimal care of mothers and their babies at the bedside.

PeriGen, Inc., the global leader in applying real-time clinical decision support to perinatal systems, will demonstrate its fetal surveillance technologies at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society’s (HIMSS) annual conference and exhibition, March 3-7, at New Orleans’ Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

Taylor Regional Hospital is a 55-bed rural community facility that serves 170,000 residents of Middle Georgia. The hospital replaced its L&D unit’s older perinatal system with PeriCALM Tracings, which includes Patterns, to support its award-winning high standards of safety and quality.

“PeriGen’s Patterns take the guesswork out of assessing fetal strips and supports informed communication and data sharing among our physicians and nurses,” said Hollie Conner, R.N., nurse manager at Taylor Regional Hospital. “It is a great tool for any rural hospital such as ours wanting to continue delivering higher quality and safer patient care. For physicians and nurses especially, it’s helpful to have a second ‘pair of eyes’ to confirm the fetal heart rate patterns that they are viewing onscreen and that their knowledge-based treatment decisions are on the right track.”

Griffin Hospital is a 160-bed acute care community hospital serving more than 100,000 residents of the Lower Naugatuck Valley Region. PeriCALM is the facility’s first electronic perinatal system.

“PeriGen’s PeriCALM was the obvious choice after a careful review of the market-ready OB information systems that we considered,” said Patrick Charmel, president and chief executive officer, Griffin Hospital.  “Our nurses and physicians were impressed by the system’s unique capabilities, both for real-time pattern recognition of fetal monitor tracings and as a tool to conduct retrospective patient care reviews. PeriCALM’s Patterns and Curve technologies will support the efforts of our clinicians at the bedside, provide remote access to fetal tracings for our obstetricians, and enhance the quality of care provided to our patients.”

PeriGen announced in January that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) experts compared PeriCALM’s Patterns software to having an expert at the bedside continuously evaluate a baby’s fetal heart rate. The results validated that clinicians can have the confidence to use the FDA-cleared PeriCALM Patterns technology to interpret the electronic fetal monitoring strip – the most subjective and highest risk task in delivering a baby.  The game-changing results were published in January’s American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, were presented in a poster on Feb. 15 at the Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine’s 33rd Annual Meeting, and were the subject of a commentary by The New York Times reporter Steve Lohr on Feb. 17.

“We applaud hospitals such as Taylor and Griffin for using the market’s most advanced perinatal technology,” said Matthew Sappern, PeriGen chief executive officer. “With obstetrics being a hospital’s highest risk area and especially in our litigious environment, our newest generation of smarter tools is changing the course of perinatal care, one patient at a time. We bring patented, decision support and actionable, meaningful data to labor and delivery to help OB clinicians detect risk and to move them closer from subjective to objective interpretation of the fetal monitoring strip–which can have a life-time impact on mother and child.”

About PeriGen, Inc.

PeriGen, Inc., is an innovative provider of fetal surveillance systems employing patented, pattern-recognition and obstetrics technologies that empower perinatal clinicians to make confident, real-time decisions about the mothers and babies in their care. PeriGen’s customer-centric team of clinicians and technologists builds the most advanced systems available to augment obstetric decision-making and improve communications among the clinical team at the point of care, while supporting data flow between healthcare IT systems.

PeriGen’s unique fetal surveillance products provide dynamic visual cues that direct clinicians to the most essential patient information displayed on the screen. Unlike legacy fetal monitoring devices and software from non-specialist companies, PeriGen Visual Cueing™ provides an instant view of the mother’s and baby’s current status and trends over time to avoid errors, increasing patient safety and reducing risk for clinicians and hospitals.
